Dental laboratory technicians fill prescriptions from dentists for crowns, bridges, dentures, and other dental
prosthetics. Prescription or work authorization will be sent by dentist for each item to be manufactured, along
with an impression or mold of the patient's mouth or teeth. Then, by pouring plaster into the impression and
allowing it to set, dental technicians create a model of the patient's mouth. The model is placed on an apparatus
that mimics the bite and movement of the patient's jaw. Dental technicians examine the model, noting the size and
shape of the adjacent teeth, as well as gaps within the gumline. After that, technicians build and shape a
wax tooth or teeth model is built and shaped a wax tooth by dental techs, using small hand instruments called wax
carvers and wax spatulas.
Dental Technician Salary: Education and Training
Although there are no formal training or education requirements to become a dental technician, having a high
school diploma is typically the standard requirement for obtaining a job. Most dental, laboratory technicians are
hired with a high school diploma and learn their tasks through on-the-job training. They usually begin as helpers
and gradually learn new skills as they gain experience. They begin by pouring plaster into an impression, and
progress to more complex procedures. Training in dental laboratory technology is available through
vocational-technical institutes, junior colleges, community, universities and the Armed Forces.
